Series overview

ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker for 12kV overhead networks

The ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker is an outdoor 12 kV switching device for medium-voltage overhead distribution networks. Each ZW20 unit integrates the vacuum interrupter, solid-insulated embedded pole, operating mechanism and current transformers into a compact, fully enclosed body suitable for long-term field operation.

With the embedded pole design, the ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker achieves high insulation level and protects the interrupter from moisture, dust and pollution. Together with a stable spring operating mechanism, it delivers reliable opening and closing performance under frequent switching conditions on distribution feeders.

In standard configuration the ZW20 works as a pole-mounted vacuum circuit breaker. When it is equipped with a suitable controller and sensors, the same ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker can be configured as an automatic recloser for feeder protection and distribution automation on 12 kV networks.

Manufacturing & quality control

How XBRELE builds reliable ZW20 outdoor vacuum circuit breakers

Behind every ZW20 unit there is a controlled manufacturing flow – from embedded pole casting to routine testing – designed to ensure long-term reliability on harsh outdoor lines.

From embedded pole to finished breaker

XBRELE manufactures the vacuum interrupter pole assemblies, operating mechanism and housing in a coordinated process. Each step is monitored and recorded for traceability of every ZW20 unit.

  • 01

    Vacuum interrupter & pole assembly

Vacuum interrupters are checked for stroke, over-travel and resistance, then built into the solid pole.

  • 02

    Solid insulation casting & curing

Epoxy insulation is degassed, poured and cured to form a compact embedded pole resistant to tracking.

  • 03

    Mechanism integration & adjustment

The spring mechanism is assembled, lubricated and tuned so speeds, timing and bounce meet ZW20 limits.

  • 04

    Final assembly & sealing

Poles, CTs, terminals and enclosure parts are combined into a sealed outdoor body with anti-corrosion coating.

  • 05

    Routine testing & inspection

Each breaker passes electrical, mechanical and dielectric tests before packing and shipment.

FAQ · ZW20 Series

Frequently asked questions about the ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker

Below are typical questions from utilities, EPC contractors and distributors when selecting the ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker for 12 kV overhead distribution networks and recloser projects.

What is the main difference between ZW20 and ZW32? +
Both products are outdoor medium-voltage vacuum circuit breakers, but ZW20 is typically used as a pole-mounted switching point on 12 kV lines and can be configured as an automatic recloser. ZW32 is a more compact pole-mounted breaker platform with different ratings and outline dimensions. When planning a project, the ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker is often selected where an integrated control cubicle and recloser functions are required.
Can the ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker be supplied as an automatic recloser? +
Yes. By adding a suitable controller, auxiliary CTs/VTs and wiring, the ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker can be configured as an automatic recloser with programmable protection curves and reclosing sequences. XBRELE can provide a complete ZW20 recloser package or cooperate with the customer’s specified controller brand.
Where is the ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker typically installed? +
The ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker is installed on concrete or steel poles, usually at feeder branches, section points or near pole-mounted transformers. Designers use the outline & mounting dimensions on this page to match cross-arms, brackets and hardware for the 12 kV overhead line.
What protection functions can be implemented with ZW20? +
With a suitable protection relay or recloser controller, ZW20 can provide phase over-current, earth-fault protection, sensitive earth-fault, cold-load pick-up and other functions. CTs/VTs mounted with the ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker supply the necessary signals for metering and protection.
What documentation and test reports are available for ZW20? +
XBRELE can provide outline drawings, terminal diagrams, type-test reports, routine-test reports and factory inspection records for the ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker. For utility or EPC projects, QAP/ITP documents and FAT witness testing can also be arranged according to the specification.
What is the typical delivery time for the ZW20 vacuum circuit breaker? +
For standard 12 kV ZW20 configurations, the typical lead time is about 15–25 days after order confirmation. For customized designs with special controllers, CTs/VTs or testing requirements, lead time is usually 25–35 days depending on quantity and project scope.
Which international standards are used as reference for ZW20 testing? +
ZW20 outdoor vacuum circuit breakers are designed and type tested with reference to the IEC 62271 series for high-voltage switchgear, in particular IEC 62271-100 for high-voltage AC circuit-breakers. For more information about the scope and latest edition of IEC 62271-100, you can refer to the official IEC webstore page IEC 62271-100 .
